The these days commonly used term “royalty free” refers to a rather broad range of stock image license models which all have in common that once the usage is paid for (normally when the picture is purchased) no additional fees apply. Each stock photo agency may have its own terms and conditions, which should be studied before purchasing an image, but generally, royalty free photos are priced simply by file size rather than usage. The utilization history of such a stock photograph is difficult to track, which can be a disadvantage if the image is supposed to be a key part of the design, like in commercial applications and advertisement, but if this is no issue, royalty free images deliver enormous freedom to designers, as they can be used as background textures, page elements and illustrations again and again (some restrictions may apply with some stock agencies), so creating your own collection or photo library over time can make your design business more efficient and hassle-free.
